Avoid distracting job titles

When you think about how to write the best job description, think about if you saw a job title that said Food of the Century, would you know that it was for a Head Chef role? Perhaps not. These kinds of job titles may work well to highlight your company’s personality, but they don’t work quite as effectively when recruiting.

Confusing job titles are likely to put an applicant off and since this is the first thing they will look at before they even get to the description itself, it’s important to get this spot on. People are busy and you don’t want to lose them because you have over-complicated the job title.

Make sure the job description is mobile-friendly

Searching for jobs on a mobile device is growing rapidly so it’s vital that your description is mobile-friendly and easy to read. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep your job title to a maximum of 60 characters
  • Ensure font sizes are large enough to read easily
  • Avoid huge bulks of text as people are likely to skim read
  • Make sure all text fits neatly within the area provided.

Be honest with salaries

If you state a set salary figure on your job description it might make the applicant feel like there’s no room for maneuver.

  • Use a salary range like £20k-£24k to attract a wider number of candidates.
  • Do not post a job description without mentioning the salary. No one wants to apply for a job that doesnt match or improve their current salary or required salary to move jobs.

Include the culture and values of the organisation

Every business (Restaurant/Hotel/Caterer…..) has its own set of values and a culture, which is usually defined by its colleagues.

The culture and values within the business can be a great way to attract the right candidate, so use it within your job description as it will really help make the difference between a candidate reading or actually apply for the role.

If you have a relaxed dress code or maybe you have regular traditions like quiz nights and payday drinks. It can be a great idea to mention this on your job description. Candidates want to know that your company has great culture as well as good job opportunities and it’ll make your company look extra appealing.

Focus on the candidates growth and development

Another fantastic way to entice a candidate to apply for a role is to explain how the job will contribute towards your business growth and targets, as well as how the candidate working within the role can develop their skills and experience. What training will be available for the successful candidate? How often will there be reviews on performance and pay?

This kind of information can make the candidate feel like you, value your staff and genuinely care about their happiness with the role and their future progression.
